The PED-id project

The PED-id project will provide decision-makers with improved information about positive energy district options and impacts at an early stage. The purpose is to create a corresponding knowledge-based participation process. The project is EU-financed and involves five organizations in three different countries.

The problem

Cities require a lot of energy and currently account for more than 70% of global CO2 emissions and this is expected to grow. The energy needs to be produced sustainably and used efficiently. Today, this is not done on a large enough scale.

The solution

A positive energy district, or a PED, is a neighbourhood that produces a surplus of renewable energy, which can help to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions. New buildings are designed with high energy performance and existing buildings are upgraded. The neighbourhood then stores, manages and uses energy in a smart way. PEDs are a proven solution to lower CO2 emissions and already exists in European cities today, but we need more.

The PED-ID project

The PED-ID project is an EU-funded initiative that provides decision-makers with guidance about methods, tools and other solutions for PEDs at an early stage of development. Stakeholders can use these tools directly in a PED process to consolidate their options, making decisions based on data in a holistic assessment. With our solutions, know-how and support, you can start a PED today!

Creating PEDs

The cornerstones of the project are the living labs located in Uppsala (Sweden), Vienna (Austria) and Rožnov (Czech Republic). The developed processes and evaluations for energy efficiency are being tested in the living labs.

As stakeholders in the city, you have a big role to play, but it doesn’t have to be hard. Creating PEDs is an affordable and realistic solution to cut energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions. We have the expertise and the tools you need to create PEDs, and we can facilitate the process and help you create a PED in your neighbourhood.

Process Map from Knowledge-based Approach for PEDs

This document summarises the key findings from the application of the Best-practice in the Stakeholder
Engagement methodology that was assessed in the ”living-lab” testbed at Uppsala Business Park in
Sweden. It also provides some reflections on the potential role of Digital Twins in supporting the initial
stages of PED development and the potential for the use of novel business models.

Annex: Identifying the Potential Role of Digital Twins in Supporting PEDs

This report presents the results froman interviewstudy that evaluated the potential of Digital Twins to contribute toPositive Energy Districts (PEDs)with focuson earlydevelopmentstages, from selectedstakeholders’ point of view.

Holistic Stakeholder Model for early PEDs

This report explains in a very practical and hands-on way the stakeholder process on how to apply these concepts in Positive Energy District.

Visual concept for presentation of results of PED assessment

This document outlines the communication strategy for PED inception to be used by a consultant or PED facilitator, to communicate effectively the aspects involved in this type of project to a general audience.

Criteria catalogue for Positive-Energy-Districts

The aim of this report is to define viable options and definitions for Positive Energy Districts. Based on the possible definitions, district developers can decide for themselves how the definition should be agreed upon for their own district.

PED agreement model for cities and municipalities

The purpose of this agreement model is to detail terms & responsibilities concerning the several aspects involved in a PED project – thus being an instrument for quality assurance to all stakeholders involved.

Living Labs: PED-ID experiences in Sweden, Austria & Czech Republic

An essential part of the PED-ID work scope was to apply in real environment contexts the methods and tools developed specifically for PEDs in the previous work packages. This testing procedure happened through our Living Labs, located in Sweden, Austria and Czech Republic.
